Things to Do in Maryland


Bordered by the Chesapeake Bay, Pennsylvania on the north, and a small piece of Virginia on the south, Maryland offers the vacationer much in the way of history, culture and outdoor recreation.

You may want to stay in one area of Maryland the entire duration of your vacation, or you may wish to travel to different parts of Maryland to experience all that she has to offer. Whichever way you decide, a few areas in Maryland you may want to focus on, as well as the things to do in those areas, include:

Baltimore

Baltimore is the largest city in the state of Maryland and offers visitors some of these must-see attractions:

Fell's Point - with its cobblestone streets and funky shops, Fell's Point is a great waterfront location to visit in Baltimore. While there be sure to take a cruise on the Black-Eyed Susan, a paddlewheel boat which cruises the Baltimore Harbor. Another fun thing to do is take a walking Ghost Tour of Fell's Point, as well as the haunted pub tour, which takes you to Fell's Point most haunted pubs.

View from the Observation Level, World Trade Center - To get a great view of the Baltimore Inner Harbor, head on over to the Observation Level of the Baltimore World Trade Center, where you have floor-to-ceiling windows to give you an awesome, unobstructed view.

The Washington Monument and Museum at Mount Vernon Place - It will take you 228 steps to get to the top of the Washington Monument, but the climb will be worth it for the panoramic view. There are four gardens around the monument, which are then surrounded by the Walters Art Museum and the Peabody Conservatory of Music.

Frederick County

Located west of Baltimore, Frederick, Maryland is the second largest city in the State of Maryland. Located on the Mason Dixon Line, the towns of Frederick county were occupied by troops from the North and the South, so offers much in the way of Civil War history.

Antietam National Battlefield - Antietam National Battlefield commemorates the bloodiest one day battle of the Civil War, which took place on September 17, 1826. You will find a visitor center, 10-mile tour road and Antietam National Cemetery. The site is handicapped accessible.

Monocacy National Battlefield - This is a self-guided car tour along 4 trails that commemorate the 1864 battle that saved Washington from the advancing Confederates.

Covered Bridges - Frederick County has three of the only eight remaining covered bridges in the state of Maryland. They are The Roddy Road, Loys Station, and Utica Mills bridges.

State Parks - if you're into hiking you're in luck, as Frederick County has numerous state parks with fantastic hiking, including C&O Canal National Historical Park, Catoctin Mountain Park and Cunningham Falls State Park.

New Market - Between Frederick and Baltimore lies New Market, known as the "Antique Capital of Maryland." There you'll find brick sidewalks and over 30 antique shops for your antiquing pleasure. You'll also find quaint B&Bs in which to rest your weary shopping bones.

Deep Creek Lake, Garrett County

Deep Creek Lake, Garret County is located in Western Maryland, and is a year-round vacation area. You'll find six state parks where you can go cross-country skiing and snowshoeing in the winter, and hiking during the rest of the year. Wisp Ski Resort is nearby for downhill skiing. Golfers will enjoy the two 18-hold golf courses, while water lovers will love the boating and jet skiing. Hikers should definitely check out Shallow Falls State Park, which some consider the most breathtaking scenery in all Maryland.
