Mt. Rushmore

Located in South Dakota, Mt. Rushmore attracts more than 2.5 million visitors per year. What the people want to see, of course, are the immense faces of George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt and Abraham Lincoln carved into the granite face of Mt. Rushmore, a feat that took 14 years to accomplish. You can reach Mt. Rushmore by plane to Rapid City, then renting a car for a 23-mile drive to the monument. Although the summer can get crowded, a summer visit will allow you to see free performances by bands and choruses from all over America. The most crowded month is in early August, when bikers on Harley-Davidsons arrive for the Sturgis Motorcycle classic.

Grand Canyon National Park

A favorite summer vacation spot the world over is the Grand Canyon. Located in Northern Arizona, the Grand Canyon is definitely a national park you must experience. The Grand Canyon is a wonder of erosion, having been carved by the Colorado River. It's amazing to see how the force of water could create a mighty gorge that is 277 miles long, 17 miles wide, and, in some places, nearly 6,000 feet deep. You may be tempted to view the canyon then move on, but you are encouraged to stay a few days and truly experience the Grand Canyon by foot. If you've obtained a permit ahead of time, you can hike down the Canyon and camp or stay at the Phantom Ranch, or, if you're not that sure of your hiking abilities, you can hike an hour or two down the canyon, then hike up. Just be sure you leave early enough in the morning so that you can be back up by nightfall. There are numerous trails down, some more challenging than others. The Kaibab trail is probably best for beginners. The South Rim is by far the most popular, but if you want to see the Canyon from the North Rim, there is a shuttle which provides rim to rim service from mid-May to Mid-October. The drive takes about 4-5 hours, so going from Rim to Rim is a day trip.

Great Smoky Mountains National Park

If you live in the Southern United States you are probably quite familiar with the Great Smoky Mountains, located along the border between Tennessee and North Carolina. The Great Smoky Mountains National Park receives over 9 million visitors per year, so its popularity as a summer vacation spot is no secret.

Open all year round, the Great Smoky Mountains National Park offers an incredible range of activities for visitors. Besides touring the area by car, you can take your pick of fishing, camping, hiking (over 800 miles of trails), horseback riding and nature viewing. Many people rent a cabin in nearby Gatlinburg and spend a week or two exploring all the Great Smokies has to offer.

In addition to onboard activities, cruise ships often dock in a number of ports. A cruise ship with a romantic theme is likely to select ports with romantic settings.
