Amelia Island FL Vacation

For such a small island (13 miles long, 4 miles wide), Amelia Island has a long history, as well as a long list of things to see and do. Since 1562 Amelia Island, off the north coast of Florida, has flown 8 different flags.

So, what's so special about an Amelia Island, Fl. vacation? Let's start with the wildlife. Amelia Island is a great place to view wildlife. Florida beaches are home to 90% of all nesting sea turtles. If you're lucky you'll be able to view dolphins, manatees, otters, and alligators. If you're luckier you'll be able to find prehistoric shark's teeth along the beach.

While you're there, take a private guided nature tour through the creeks and rivers of Amelia and Cumberland Island, or experience the 90-minute ghost tour of Amelia Island, which takes you through historical Fernandina Beach (Call 904-548-0996 for ghost-tour reservations).

Although sitting on the beach and taking it the beauty is great, some of you might like a little more activity on your vacations. While on Amelia Island you can partake in a great number of activities. Amelia Island affords one of only a handful of beach-horseback-riding opportunities in the nation, where you can experience the white-sand beaches on horseback. (For reservations, call The Kelly Seahorse Ranch at 904-491-5166).

For those of you who relish being on the water, you can take sailing lessons at the Windward Sailing School (904-261-9125), or a guided kayak tour (call 904-251-0016).

Looking for something romantic while enjoying your Amelia Island vacation getaway? Check out Voyager Ventures Sunset Sail, a two-hour sunset sailing excursion where you and your significant other can view dolphins and beautiful sunsets. Call Voyager Ventures at 904-753-2388 for reservations.

Places to Stay on Amelia Island in Florida

Author: Richard Rspad

Amelia Island is an old-fashioned, Victorian, seaport destination located just 30 miles north of Jacksonville, Florida. The 13 miles of grand coastline hosts several luxurious places to stay.

For a feel of history combined with modern conveniences, visitors might choose to stay at the Amelia Island Plantation. Built in harmony with nature, the Amelia Island Plantation offers world-class golf while preserving the habitats and marshes indigenous to the island.

The Plantation offers 4 distinctly different 18-hole golf opportunities, all of which are available to visitors. Instruction is available at three of the four courses, including family lessons. World-class tennis opportunities are also available at Amelia Island Plantation. Even if you are not personally into golf or tennis or if you are accompanying a golf player, there are plenty of other leisure opportunities available at the Plantation. Nature walks and classes, aquatics, shopping, fine dining, an active nightlife, biking, fishing, or lazing on the property's beachfront are all activities found at the Amelia Island Plantation. There is also a spa and salon on site offering a variety of styles of massage (some exotic, others romantic), yoga, body treatments, facials, hydrotherapy, and hair and nail styling. For more information about the Amelia Island Plantation, call 1.877.843.7722.

For a place to stay with a name that is synonymous with luxury, try the Amelia Island Ritz Carlton on Amelia Island. This hotel has the accommodations you would expect from the Ritz-Carlton, including large, elegant rooms and fine dining. Like the Plantation, the property is beachfront and provides opportunities for water activities or beach lazing. The Ritz-Carlton has an onsite golf course and is central to the other courses in the area. After a day on the links or in the ocean, visitors can relax in the onsite spa, which offers many types of rubs, scrubs, and massages. For reservations, call (904) 277-1100.

Summer Beach Resort offers a different type of experience. Visitors can rent single-family homes, condos, villas, or penthouses for a more private stay. Each development offers private swimming pools, beach clubs, and snack bars. The resort also offers an 18-hole golf course. For information on rentals or purchasing property, call (800) 862-9297.

If you desire a more homey vacation try one of Amelia Island's B&B's. All eight of these properties are housed in historic downtown buildings that will make the visitor feel like they are stepping back in time. For a breakdown of B&B's call the Amelia Island Chamber of Commerce at (904) 261-3248.
